This packet includes 10 NGSS activities/assessments designed to prepare your students for Science Fair. These NGSS activities/assessments use inexpensive paper towels. Each session includes a hands-on NGSS activity/assessment and a minds-on reading. Students engage in NGSS activities/assessments from chromatography to full product testing in order to make claims about brands of paper towels supported by evidence. Students use the science and engineering practice of planning and carrying out investigations to learn the disciplinary core idea of the structure and properties of matter by measuring and describing physical properties of the paper towels. Use these activities/assessments to prepare students to plan and carry out full inquiry on their own. Detailed teaching notes, student recording pages, and scoring rubrics are included.
5-PS1 Matter and its Interactions
5-PS1-3 Make observations and measurements to identify materials based on their properties. [Clarification Statement: Examples of materials to be identified could include baking soda and other powders, metals, minerals, and liquids. Examples of properties could include color, hardness, reflectivity, electrical conductivity, thermal conductivity, response to magnetic forces, and solubility; density is not intended as an identifiable property.] [Assessment Boundary: Assessment does not include density of distinguishing mass and weight.)
