This is a 3 day project to complete the NGSS Standard 5-PS3-1: Use models to describe that energy in animals’ food (used for body repair, growth, motion, and to maintain body warmth) was once energy from the sun.
First, students will learn the ways that animals use their energy, and generate examples of energy usage for two different animals. Next, students will investigate the path that energy takes to get into our food by creating food chains with several examples of food. Students will learn that every food product gets is energy originally from the sun.
Students will then apply their knowledge in a project to represent how they get energy and what they use their energy for. Students will create a poster with a drawing of themselves in the middle. On the left side, students will draw food chains leading to themselves, showing the path of energy from the sun to themselves for several types of food. On the right side, students will draw and explain examples of four ways that they use their energy.
Students should have prior knowledge about how to create / read food chains.
