About the Differentiation

Topics are differentiated for upper elementary, intermediate and advanced students. This bundle is MOST appropriate for middle school grades, but works great for upper elementary and lower high school grades as well. A color-shape code system will help you differentiate concepts for your students' needs and abilities.

Next Generation Science Standards

This product satisfies all the Next Generation Science Standards for Grades 3-5 and Middle School. The content in these products exceeds NGSS in order to satisfy state standards, to provide background information to NGSS and to enrich or enhance NGSS. Reference files are included with this download to help you correlate activities to NGSS.

The concepts and skills addressed in the nature of science products align with the NGSS Nature of Science eight major themes. The products address themes that extend the science and engineering practices and cross-cutting concepts across grades 3-5 and 6-8. These practices are outlined in Appendix F and H at http://www.nextgenscience.org/get-to-know.

The following resources are included in this curriculum:

POWERPOINTS, NOTES & EXAMS

These resources are designed to help you deliver, discuss and assess science content. There are three teaching tools included with each PowerPoint product in this curriculum:

• PowerPoint Presentation (differentiated and editable slides)

• Scaffolded Notes (differentiated and editable, scaffolded and modified notes included)

• Summative Examination (differentiated and editable, answer key included)

The PowerPoints are .pptx files. The notes and exams are .docx files. The fonts are safe for use with Microsoft Office PowerPoint and Word and come with most Microsoft Office versions.

INTERACTIVE NOTEBOOK UNITS

My interactive notebook lessons are organized into units. Each unit is composed of interactive notebook chapters. Each chapter includes:

• An overview with photos of the completed INB activity

• One page of input notes (differentiated when necessary)

• At least one INB activity (key included)

• A 4-5 question mini assessment (key included)

• A 2-part reflection exercise (generic & self-assessment reflection prompts included)

Editable copies of all input notes included as separate .docx files

BELL RINGERS (DAILY WARMUPS OR EXIT SLIPS)

These differentiated and tiered 3-part activities are designed to "warmup" students at the beginning of a lesson. The bell ringers align with the interactive notebook chapters for each respective unit. Full and half page printing options and key included. Fillable PDF files and slides that can be used with Google classrooms and Microsoft Teams included.

HOMEWORK

These differentiated and tiered 3-part assignments are designed to be a 15 to 20 minute at-home or independent activity. The assignments align with the interactive notebook chapters for each respective unit. They are best used following an INB lesson. Key included. Fillable PDF files and slides that can be used with Google classrooms and Microsoft Teams included.

READING PASSAGES

These differentiated reading passages with text-based evidence comprehension questions can be used a variety of ways, including close reading in the classroom, preparation for SNAPs labs or homework. Reading passages align with the interactive notebook chapters for each respective unit. Key included. Fillable PDF files and slides that can be used with Google classrooms and Microsoft Teams included.

TASK CARDS

Task cards are designed to assess students on key ideas and concepts covered in each respective units. Questions are differentiated (with a color and shape code) and tiered with a "signal strength" code so to probe lower, mid and higher order thinking. Questions are tiered according to the revised Bloom's taxonomy. Answer sheets (differentiated) and key included for each task card set.

DIGITAL TASK CARDS

Digital task cards are designed to work with Google Forms. The digital task card can be assigned to students with Google Classrooms or shared as a link with your student any way you choose. Self-grading. Task cards cannot be edited but can be added or removed from the form. Requires internet access.

SNAPS LAB STATIONS ACTIVITIES

SNAPs Lab Stations Activities require students to use science, math, literacy, problem-solving and engineering skills. They combine the three dimensions of science learning - science and engineering practices, disciplinary core ideas and crosscutting concepts - in order to meet the Next Generation Science Standards. The labs also make interdisciplinary connections to STEM, Math CCSS and ELA CCSS to build the appropriate skills.

Note: For the most up-to-date list of currently available labs, see the Integrated Science Lab Stations Bundle.

GOOGLE CLASSROOM LESSONS

Google Classroom lessons include modified files optimized for use with Google Suite Apps. These files are designed to be shared or assigned to students using Google Classroom. The PowerPoints and Notes are reformatted to work with Google Slides and Docs. Bell ringers, quizzes, homework and reading passages are reformatted so that students complete the activities directly in Google Slides or Forms, permitting paper-free and electronic distribution and collection of assignments. To upload the files from this download to your Google Drive, you must use the Google Drive Backup and Sync App. You CANNOT directly upload the folders of lessons to your Google Drive within a web browser. Directions included.

NGSSMS-PS4-3
Integrate qualitative scientific and technical information to support the claim that digitized signals are a more reliable way to encode and transmit information than analog signals. Emphasis is on a basic understanding that waves can be used for communication purposes. Examples could include using fiber optic cable to transmit light pulses, radio wave pulses in wifi devices, and conversion of stored binary patterns to make sound or text on a computer screen. Assessment does not include binary counting. Assessment does not include the specific mechanism of any given device.
NGSS4-ESS2-1
Make observations and/or measurements to provide evidence of the effects of weathering or the rate of erosion by water, ice, wind, or vegetation. Examples of variables to test could include angle of slope in the downhill movement of water, amount of vegetation, speed of wind, relative rate of deposition, cycles of freezing and thawing of water, cycles of heating and cooling, and volume of water flow. Assessment is limited to a single form of weathering or erosion.
NGSSMS-PS1-6
Undertake a design project to construct, test, and modify a device that either releases or absorbs thermal energy by chemical processes. Emphasis is on the design, controlling the transfer of energy to the environment, and modification of a device using factors such as type and concentration of a substance. Examples of designs could involve chemical reactions such as dissolving ammonium chloride or calcium chloride. Assessment is limited to the criteria of amount, time, and temperature of substance in testing the device.
NGSS4-PS4-3
Generate and compare multiple solutions that use patterns to transfer information. Examples of solutions could include drums sending coded information through sound waves, using a grid of 1’s and 0’s representing black and white to send information about a picture, and using Morse code to send text.
NGSSMS-ESS1-1
Develop and use a model of the Earth-sun-moon system to describe the cyclic patterns of lunar phases, eclipses of the sun and moon, and seasons. Examples of models can be physical, graphical, or conceptual.
