This is great for mainstream, SPED and English language learners. You have front-loaded vocabulary, visual representations of Kinetic and Potential energy and it's EASY PREP!!! I also provide teacher directions and a key...
-Print pages 3, 4, 5 and 6 of this document for each group.
-Have the students read page #3 “What is Energy” in order to front-load the vocabulary and scaffold the activity.
-Cut along the dotted lines on pages 5 and 6 so that you have 16 individual pictures/descriptions (I suggest a teacher’s aide, parent volunteer or a student finished with work).
-Scramble and place these pictures in one envelope per group.
-Have the students place the correct pictures underneath either -Kinetic Energy or Potential Energy on page 4 of this document.
-After students have finished the card sort, they can then draw pictures of how each example of kinetic and potential energy can be converted into potential and kinetic energy respectively.
-You can print or have the students draw the second part where the students describe how Kinetic energy is converted to potential energy and vise versa.
-As for the energy conversions, you will get lot’s of different answers which is great for class discussions. Essentially, all the Kinetic energy pictures convert to Potential energy if the person or object stops moving. For example, if the skateboarder stops skating and picks up his board, his board now has Potential energy. And as long as The Potential energy pictures shows the person/object moving, then it converts to kinetic energy.
