Students will develop an understanding of the transfer of thermal energy and insulation as they conduct research, design, build and test an insulating device, and work together to design and conduct an experiment using all of the devices they produced.

Students conduct the following activity:
Observations of insulating materials
Design an insulating device using different materials
Students then design a lab based around their device. They create the following:
Create a problem and hypothesis
Write out the steps of a procedure
Design their own data table
Graph their data
Answer analysis questions (3)
Write a conclusion statement
You will need access to the following materials:
Plastic water bottles
You will need access to the following equipment:
Access to cold and hot water.
This lab aligns with the following Next Generation Science Standards:
MS-PS1-4: Develop a model that predicts and describes changes in particle motion, temperature, and state of a pure substance when thermal energy is added or removed.
MS-PS3-5: Construct, use, and present arguments to support the claim that when the kinetic energy of an object changes, energy is transferred to or from the object.
