Product Description
Students will create an experiment to answer the following problem:

How does the amount of gravel, sand, and soil present in a soil filter affect the amount of water that passes through the cup in a set amount of time?

This is in an inquiry lab and students are expected to create their own experiment. They will complete the following:
Build a soil filter to use in their experiment
Create a hypothesis based on a problem
Identify the independent, dependent, and a control variable for their experiment.
Write out a procedure and then follow each step.
Create a data table, and collect data
Graph the data that is collected
Answer analysis questions (5)
Write a conclusion statement

Students will need access to the following materials:
Plastic cup
Pushpin
Sand
Gravel
Soil

Teacher instructions are included and suggestions to modify sections of the lab.

This lab aligns with the following Next Generation Science Standards:

MS-ESS2-4: Develop a model to describe the cycling of water through Earth's systems driven by energy from the sun and the force of gravity.
