No prior knowledge of sunspots is required, so this is great as an extension activity in any NGSS space (sun, stars, solar system) unit!
Related NGSS Astronomy Standards: MS-ESS1-1, MS-ESS1-3, HS-ESS1-1
This 2-page worksheet provides students with 3 decades of yearly sunspot data, which they plot on a provided graph. This data gives them enough information to conclude that sunspots occur in an 11-year interval. After some quick analysis questions (including a claims/evidence/reasoning section), students are instructed to predict the next 15 years of sunspot data. Students then use the internet to find out how close their predictions came to actual, observed data for these years. (This data is provided for you, the teacher, in case you choose not to have students use the internet.)
