NEW!!! If you're looking to CHALLENGE your students to create model molecules, then this is the activity for you! This FUN and ENGAGING two day activity addresses the NGSS Performance Expectation: MS-PS1-1. Develop models to describe the atomic composition of simple molecules and extended structures by having student create molecules out of simple fasteners (nuts, bolts, and washers) you can buy at Home Depot for under $10!!!!
This activity includes:
Materials needed per group: Easily purchased at Home Depot!!!
Use this activity after students have a basic understanding of atoms (smallest part of matter that all substances are made of) and molecules (made of two or more atoms). Knowledge of elements and symbols is very helpful, but using the Periodic Table of Elements will help, too!
If you’re looking to extend this activity, please see my store for the “NGSS Middle School Develop a Model Molecule Project” which also addresses this standard - MS-PS1-1!!! Students choose a molecule of their liking to research and create out of junk from home! It includes a directions page, pictures of student examples, rubric and notes for the teacher. It’s an easy way to assess their knowledge!
This lesson and activity addresses the NGSS Performance Expectation: MS-PS1-1. Develop models to describe the atomic composition of simple molecules and extended structures and DCI: Substances are made from different types of atoms, which combine with one another in various ways. Atoms form molecules that range in size from two to thousands of atoms.
