This is a multi-day project to complete the NGSS Standards of either 5-LS2-1 or MS-LS2-3, both of which include developing a model to describe the movement of matter among living and nonliving things in the ecosystem.
In this ready to print project, students create a model to show how matter and energy cycle through the environment by designing a closed ecosystem.
Students create a plan for a “pop bottle ecosystem” that includes two sections, a terrestrial ecosystem and an aquatic ecosystem. Based on their research, they choose organisms (a producer, consumer, and decomposer) to include in each ecosystem and explain where each organism will get the resources that they need to live. These resources will come from their interactions with each other. At the end, you may choose to actually build the systems in class, although you do not need to.
Prior knowledge needed includes:
-Vocabulary of biotic and abiotic factors
-Classifying producers, consumers, decomposers
-Reading food webs
