Card sorts are amazing! They give students the ability to work with vocabulary in a way that helps foster meaningful discussions with one another about content and helps you as the instructor to check for understanding.
You could use this card sort in the beginning or the end of a unit. I prefer to use it as a review after the students have done numerous activities that would scaffold the card sort. I include a PowerPoint that’s great scaffolding for the card sort. However, it’s very versatile and would fit just about anywhere in a unit.
First print out pages 1-3 for the 3 categories the students would be sorting the cards under. Then print pages 4-9, cut them into 24 separate cards, mix them up and place them in an envelope per group. So each group will have the three category headings (Newton's 3 Laws) and an envelope with the mixed up cards.
Have students take out the cards and attempt to correctly put them under the correct law. Ideally you’d want them to get the sorting correct on the first try, however let them get them wrong and discuss the rationale for the way they sorted the cards. When everyone is done, have them present to the class and explain their reasons for sorting them in the manner they did.
Eventually I put the key up on the screen so they can get the sort correct.
You get the cord sort, a key, detailed teacher notes and a 50 slide PowerPoint.
This Activity includes the following concepts:
Balanced and Unbalanced Force
Friction and the 4 types
Law of Universal Gravitation
Law of Conservation of Momentum
