~Bat emergent reader: “Bat Facts”
Before having students write for the bats craftivity, we read “Bat Facts” to get ideas for our writing.
(I use my document projector, and read we "Bat Facts" together. I then pass out student copies, and let them practice reading at their desks. Finally, I have them write and draw a bat on the last page.)
~ Writing Craftivity
(idea: Glue writing paper upside down inside the bats so you can hang the bats upside down for display.)
Using the emergent reader "Bat Facts", we write bat facts on the stationary provided. (Or, you could ask them to write a bat themed story.)
*Copy the bat ears and wings on gray construction paper, eyes on white, and noses on pink. (I like to use google eyes instead of paper.)
*Glue the bat writing page in the center of a standard large piece of black construction paper. Fold over the sides to cover the writing page. I have provided stationary with both standard and guide lines.
*Have students cut and glue the bat ears to the top and eyes/ nose on the front flaps. With a black marker, tell them to color in pupils and nostrils.
(The nose gets glued to only one side of the flap, so the flaps will still open.)
*With a white crayon, have them draw a mouth and fangs.
*Have them cut and glue wings to the front of the bat, so it looks like they are folded in.
*Finally, have them cut an glue small black squares to the bottom for feet.

*One is a standard take home book.
* One has blank spaces to be filled in by students.
It covers: What is a magnet, Magnetic fields, how magnets are made, how Earth is like a magnet, compass, and various uses for magnets.
~ Magnets KWL worksheet: Know, Want to Know, Learned
We complete the KWL: know and want to know sections before reading the fact book. Then, I like to read the standard version book to the class using our elmo. I pass out the books with the blank spaces. We re-read as a class, and fill in the missing words to help with comprehension. Finally, I have them complete the their KWL charts.
Many of the examples lend themselves to easy classroom experiments.

°Sight page – Trace the sentence, and glue googly eyes on the face.
°Hearing page – Trace the sentence. Color, cut, and paste noisy items around the ear such (ex. animals, vehicles, etc.)
°Touch page – Trace words. Trace student’s hand and glue small sensory objects to the finger tips. (ex. Cotton, sandpaper, foam sticker, tape, feather, fluff, cloth, etc.)

°Taste page - Trace words. Color, cut, and paste tasty items.
**For glued items, use the cut outs provided or pictures children find in old magazines!
♡I have also included a cute and quick 5 senses popcorn extension activity. Before this activity, review the 5 senses. Have students circle the sense being used, and glue a piece of popcorn on at the end of each line. After reading the last line, let them eat the popcorn. (Check for allergies prior.)
