Product Description
This Simple Machines Engineering Project challenges elementary or middle school students to design a solution to a problem at school, at home, or anywhere else. They have to use four simple machines to design, develop and draw a prototype of a compound machine. Students draw, label, and present to the class similar to the show Shark Tank. Playing a YouTube clip of the show beforehand makes it fun too! It includes an outline to keep students organized and on track! In the conclusions, students reflect on their project to identify the costs, benefits, and impacts on the environment as well as state two revisions they would make in the future! (The formatting of the documents in the preview looks bad, but I assure you it is not as many people who upload to TPT know!)

This project includes a RUBRIC for easy grading and ALL parts can be easily edited to fit your students' needs!!!! (Example: they can build instead of draw!)

It can be assigned individually or in groups and can be modified to meet the elementary or middle school NGSS Next Generation Science Standards Performance Expectations below:

3-5-ETS1-1. Define a simple design problem reflecting a need or a want that includes specified criteria for success and constraints on materials, time, or cost.
3-5-ETS1-2. Generate and compare multiple possible solutions to a problem based on how well each is likely to meet the criteria and constraints of the problem.
MS-ETS1-1. Define the criteria and constraints of a design problem with sufficient precision to ensure a successful solution, taking into account relevant scientific principles and potential impacts on people and the natural environment that may limit possible solutions.
MS-ETS1-2. Evaluate competing design solutions using a systematic process to determine how well they meet the criteria and constraints of the problem.
MS-ETS1-3. Analyze data from tests to determine similarities and differences among several design solutions to identify the best characteristics of each that can be combined into a new solution to better meet the criteria for success.
