Product Description
These 2nd Grade Next Generation Science Standard for structure and function activities focus on external body parts that help the camel, giraffe, and penguin survive. That's right...3 animals are included. Kids love animals and they will love learning more about them with these activities. What makes them so special that they can survive where they do? Why do camels have a hump? How does a long tough tongue benefit a giraffe? What helps penguins stay warm?

I have included photos, body part cards, and purpose cards to help your kids learn about three different animals. I have provided suggestions in the "Teacher Tips" to get the class up and moving while learning. Check out the websites I have also listed to learn a little more to share with your students. You can even build upon these resources by incorporating fiction and nonfiction books of your own (or the library) about these animals as well.

After the learning and discussions are done, let your students share what they have learned by creating a book. I've provided the pages for that as well. Each student can make their own book.... or make it a group effort and have a team of 3 or 4 students work together, each creating one page for a group book. Place all of the pages together for a bulletin board display before you put it together to make the book for the classroom bookshelf. In addition, you can give your students some experience in presenting to an audience by letting them share their pages with the class for the final presentation activity. You decide what works best for your class and the goals you are working on.

Materials Provided

NGSS standard card to post in classroom and put on your file of materials

adaptation Book Cover for each animal
3 writing pages to answer the adaptation question provided. (3 parts per animal)
2 blank writing pages for each animal that includes a graphic on the first page.
2 ideas explaining how the adaptations could inspire an invented “tool” to help people
“Animals Inspire the Inventor in Me” writing pages for explaining one of the invention examples provided or your own idea

3 website links to support the concepts and extend learning.

These activities focus on 2nd grade science goals. However, younger students may enjoy the wonderful photos and learn quite a bit from the interesting information provided in this resource. These could also provide review for 3rd graders or be used by teachers working with students who require alternative learning materials and resources.

Study one animal or all three. Complete one set as a whole class and place the materials for the other two animals at a center. Do what works best for your class.

Here's feedback from other teachers:
"I love this resource, very helpful to teach students animal adaptations!"
"Great resource for my adaptation unit."
"Just what I was looking for to add to my animal unit!"

This year, enjoy teaching science and watch your young scientists grow.
