In this project, students are graded upon their scientific process rather than success. This includes using mathematical and computational thinking, planning an carrying out investigations, analyzing and interpreting data, designing solutions, and obtaining, evaluating, and communicating information. This project is aligned to 5th grade NGSS and requires minimal materials. Students focus primarily on 3 Crosscutting Concepts: Cause and effect, structure and function, and patterns.

THUMBNAIL INCLUDES ENTIRE PROJECT EXCEPT THE RUBRIC
This is a student-centered, standards-based project. It is up to the student to plan and carry out the investigation with the teacher aiding as a mentor. Some students will need more guidance than others, and all students can work at their level due to the nature of the rubric. This project is differentiated naturally. My advice is to take the students outside with the required materials several times a day for recording data. Teacher should guide students to record data. From this data, model plans will arise.
