    In this bundle, students:

    • investigate with making waves in water (CER introduction to waves)
    • learn about the properties of waves (amplitude, wavelength, and frequency) through an interactive PowerPoint and record notes on a Foldable/Interactive Notebook
    • explore the properties of waves in labs
    • match characteristics of electromagnetic waves on the spectrum
    • model digital and analog waves (unit)
    • are challenged and assessed on ALL MS-PS4 Waves Performance Expectations through assessment tasks and questions which can be used on pre-assessments, tests, quizzes, or for check-ins!
    • ADDED SUMMER 2020: Waves lab stations activity: model how light reflects, absorbs, and/or transmits light while investigating "How Do Sunglasses Work?" in 6 stations
    • ADDED Jan 20201: digital interactive notebook for the Waves lab stations activity

Please see individual product titles and descriptions for individual NGSS standards. This bundle addresses all three of the Waves standards, but you may need to supplement with more. This bundle is aligned fully or in part to the following NGSS physical science performance expectations:

Integrate qualitative scientific and technical information to support the claim that digitized signals are a more reliable way to encode and transmit information than analog signals. Emphasis is on a basic understanding that waves can be used for communication purposes. Examples could include using fiber optic cable to transmit light pulses, radio wave pulses in wifi devices, and conversion of stored binary patterns to make sound or text on a computer screen. Assessment does not include binary counting. Assessment does not include the specific mechanism of any given device.
Develop and use a model to describe that waves are reflected, absorbed, or transmitted through various materials. Emphasis is on both light and mechanical waves. Examples of models could include drawings, simulations, and written descriptions. Assessment is limited to qualitative applications pertaining to light and mechanical waves.
Use mathematical representations to describe a simple model for waves that includes how the amplitude of a wave is related to the energy in a wave. Emphasis is on describing waves with both qualitative and quantitative thinking. Assessment does not include electromagnetic waves and is limited to standard repeating waves.
