This is an NSTA-vetted and recommended resource!
This is a multi-day investigation to complete the NGSS Standard 5-LS1-1: Support an argument that plants get the materials they need for growth chiefly from air and water. Includes links to a video tutorial for lab set up!
In the performance expectation, the class will set up an investigation to determine which materials plants need for growth, by taking one material away from each of 4 plants. Students will collect the height and descriptive data about the plants 3 times over 2 weeks, to come to the conclusion that plants must have sunlight, water, and carbon dioxide, and that while soil does help a plant to grow better, a plant can survive without soil.
Lesson includes Teacher Guides, Student Worksheets, Answer Keys, and video tutorial link!
This resource can also be found in a FULL 5th grade Ecology unit that includes all three NGSS Ecology Standards: Found Here
