In this NGSS/STEM lesson, students use a ice-salt bath to draw heat out of 5mL of water in a test tube. Students measure the temperature every 30 seconds. Data reveals no temperature change during the phase change until the thermometer is frozen in the ice. Temperature drops after the phase change is complete. Students then remove the test tube of ice from the ice bath and leave it in the room to warm up, still recording the temperature every 30 seconds. Data reveals that temperature does not change during melting.
Students then graph the data and proceed to answering the Lesson 16 HW Supplement questions in preparation for a class discussion.
