In this NGSS/STEM lesson, students play a phase change game that models matter and energy interactions. Each student is a particle with energy. Paperclips represent energy. Particles interacting with one another play Rock/Paper/Scissors to determine a winner. The winner gains an energy token and the game continues. Students reaching a certain energy threshold change phase.
Cards are then distributed and each student becomes a different substance (oxygen, helium, etc.) and students learn that different substances require varying amounts of energy in order to change phase.
Additional supplements are included to cement understanding. This lesson is followed by the Lesson 22 HW Supplement.
