Teaching "Night" by Elie Wiesel? This resource would be a great way to introduce your students to the amazing man behind the book. It includes:
- a pre-reading internet activity, and
- four reading passages with questions (comprehension and language), and a page of short essay answer questions.
Students do not have to be studying the memoir “Night” to complete the activities in this product and of course its components can be used over more or less than five days, as it suits the teacher and the needs of the class.
To complete the pre-reading activity, students choose one of the listed interviews (found online) or they may choose one of their own with your approval (there are plenty of video interviews online as well: students may be given the option of finding their own at your discretion).
Each of the four biographical passages can be used individually or all at once and be assigned in a number of ways - in class over four days, as homework, as independent projects, etc. The passages are: “Elie Wiesel’s Early Years”, “Leaving Sighet”, “Survival” and “After Liberation”. Each is between 400 and 500 words in length.
I have also included the four biographical passages as one continuous reading text if the teacher prefers to use the material this way. The unit also includes comprehension and language questions on each page of the passages and a separate set of essay/test questions.
The comprehension and language questions with the reading passages can be used in class as bellringer/warm-up activities. As informational texts, the passages are a stand-alone product, even if the students are not studying Elie Wiesel, as they would work very well with any unit on general biography.
A full answer key is included.
