This is a lesson plan that your students will fall in love with! Pitch the Pirate is spotted by your students and needs help finding a pair of Drum Sticks lost family. Pitch will show them a map that leads them to where each member of the Percussion Family is hidden. Students have to find the hidden treasure chest in a game of I Spy, and guess which Percussion instrument is inside the chest, as a song they sing previously reveals a clue to them. The Percussion Instruments covered in this lesson plan are Bongo Drum, Conga Drum, Snare Drum, Bass Drum, Tambourine, Marimba, Crash Cymbals, and Timpani. Engagement should be sky high because it's really fun for the kids search and find them!.

This is a GREAT lesson plan for students to see visually what the instruments are as they are forced to actively look for them in a game of I Spy, and figure out what they will be! Multiple visual aids, and analogies are demonstrated in this Slide Show to guarantee a complete and full understanding of what a Percussion Instrument is, and which instruments are Percussion Instruments. But more importantly this will also guarantee your students will be able to identify Percussion Instruments when engaging in their listening activities.

As students are searching for the Percussion Family, the search is done in Four Phases

Phase 1.Students sing a short melody on the map pitch holds them, (Do Re Mi So & La Melody) and the lyrics obtain a clue as to which instrument they are about to find will be.

Phase 2.Students will see a landscape full of animals, and like the game "I Spy" they will try and spot the hidden treasure chest.

Phase 3. Students will guess the Percussion Instrument they think is inside the chest (Thinking back to the lyrics on the map)

Phase 4. The Percussion Instrument is then revealed to the students. Students can then ask questions about the instrument before moving on to find the next missing member of the Percussion Family!

Please Note!
The "I Spy" Games become very difficult in percussion island, because it is recommended you take them to String, Brass, and Woodwind Island FIRST in that order. Percussion Island should be the last visit so it is pretty challenging!
