In this unit your students will learn the features of persuasive writing. Students will be exposed to a variety of formats of persuasive texts (ads, letters, opinion pieces etc) and learn about persuasive techniques. Students will also write their own persuasive letter, opinion piece, create an ad and research project.

The Unit plans are as follows:

Lesson 1: Features of Persuasive Texts
> Graffiti activity. Students will view a variety of persuasive texts that have been posted on chart paper around the room. Students are to bring a marker and write on the chart paper any features of persuasive texts they see. (There are 12 different texts to view such as letters, ads, opinion pieces etc)
> Students and teacher fill in the anchor chart, “Features of Persuasive Texts” (you will ad to this anchor chart as the unit progresses)

Lesson 2: Elements of Persuasive Writing > Video link C.A.R.R.
> Oral Interview: What holiday is the best? Students take turns interview a partner.
> Role Play, Mock Town Council Meeting
Several students are given a slip of paper which they are to read at a mock town council meeting. The topic of the meeting is: Should dogs be banned from the beach? Students listen to a variety of opinions on the matter.
> Mind, Alternative Mind: students and teacher fill in the graphic organizer with point for both sides, then vote on the issue.

Lesson 3: Planning and Practice
> Shared Writing, Persuasive Opinion Piece: Should uniforms be mandatory at our school?
> Students and teacher fill in the Mind, Alternative Mind graphic organizer with both sides of the argument.
> As a class vote on whether they think uniforms should be mandatory.
> Once vote is complete, fill in ‘Persuasive Writing Graphic Organizer’. Explain that the organizer will help them plan their persuasive writing piece.
> Students write a brief opinion piece using the graphic organizer as a guide. (You may want to allow those that voted differently, to write from the other perspective).

Lesson 4: Persuasive Techniques
> Mix and Match: Cut out the cards for the mix and match. Put in envelopes for small groups to match.

> Persuasive techniques in Ads: students and teacher look over a variety of advertisements and match/draw a line out to the persuasive technique(s) used in the ad.
> Persuasive Techniques Ad Hunt: Students look through magazines, newspaper or on-line to find an advertisement. Students cut out ad and identify persuasive techniques.

Lesson 5: Creating A Persuasive Ad
> Persuasive Techniques Bingo: Students try to be the first person to fill in their card by identifying the technique used in the example.
> Create a Persuasive Ad: students use spinner to determine the audience and 1 technique that they will use to create their ad. (Checklist provided for assessment)

Lesson 6: Creating Success Criteria
> Persuasive Letter Examples: students look over several example of persuasive letters written by students. In small groups they discuss the letters, how they would improve each letter, and what grade (or level) they would assign to each if they were the teacher.
> Success Criteria: Students and teacher create an anchor chart. “An Awesome Persuasive Text” (Make into a checklist that the students can refer back to)
Bump It Up, Shared Writing: Read the letter example together and discuss ways to improve it based on the success criteria they created.

Lesson 7: Prompt Jar, Formative Assessment
> Independent Writing: students choose a prompt from the jar and write a persuasive text. (Assemble the jar by cutting out all prompts and labels, everything is included, you just need a jar or other container!)
> Use checklist to assess the piece of writing (copy included in unit)

Lesson 8: Persuasive Research Report
> Discuss that sometimes we need to be more informed to have an opinion about different issues. Sometimes we need more information about a topic, and we need to research both sides before coming up with an opinion of our own. For example, today they will be discussing the question: Should animals be kept in zoos? They will be presented with information for both sides of the argument. The writing samples that they will be reading were written by students that collected research (on-line and in books and magazines) about the topic.

> After watching videos and completing readings, have a group discussion and vote on the question: Should there be zoos?

Lesson 9: Persuasive Research Report
> The research report can be given as a take home assignment or you can utilize your time in the computer lab. Students will need to gather research on an environmental issue of their choice. This research will be used to write an informed persuasive report.
> Peer editing and assessment checklist included. Students can also use the persuasive writing graphic organizer in research collecting process.

Lesson 10: Summative Assessment
> Students can choose between two persuasive writing prompts for their final summative assessment.
