Description

This vocabulary pack is full of rigorous, engaging vocabulary graphic organizers for students. Use them with ANY vocabulary words! They are a great supplement to your existing vocabulary and will add depth and practice with the words giving students more opportunity to take ownership of their words.

What's Included:
Vocabulary Graphic Organizer - For each vocabulary word, students identify the part of speech, definition, synonym, antonym, derivatives and use the word in a sentence.
Vocabulary Connections - Students make connections with their vocabulary words. First, students write the word, part of speech, and the definition. Then, students write 3 different sentences – text-to-self, text-to-text, and text-to-world.
Understanding Word Relationships Graphic Organizer- Students understand the different forms a word can take by finding 2-3 related forms for each word, identifying the part of speech and using each related form in a sentence.
Vocabulary Connotation Practice- This 3-part activity allows the teacher to combine multiple vocabulary lessons. Students classify their vocabulary words by connotative meaning (positive, negative, and neutral). Once students classify the words, they write. Afterwards, students analyze the effect that connotation had on the passages they wrote.
Vocabulary Refresh - Using Parts of Speech Correctly- This is a great activity for students that struggle with part of speech. For this activity, students classify their vocabulary words by part of speech. Next, students use examples to help them write sentences for each of their vocabulary words.
Short Story Practice- Students apply what they have learned for the elements of the short story. Students choose the vocabulary words they want to use in their story, define the words, and write a creative story that includes an exposition, 1 rising action, climax, 1 falling action, and a conclusion. Students then illustrate their story on the back of the sheet.
Vocabulary Tic-Tac-Toe - Students can choose 3 vocabulary activities (across, down, or diagonal).
Vocabulary Comic Strip - For the more artistic students, there are 6 boxes for students to create a comic strip. Students must use their vocabulary words in the dialogue of the boxes.
Vocabulary Illustrator- Students have a choice to draw or create a large picture (collage, clippings, mural, etc.) of their vocabulary words. The only requirements are that students fill the space, and that they are creative.

Ways to Use These Activities
- Rotating Stations: Place students in smalls groups that rotate from station to station. Each station can house a different activity that aligns with the RL.4/RI.4 Common Core Standard.
- Homework: Include any of these activities in your vocabulary rotation to increase student exposure to the new words and introduce different ways to use the vocabulary.
- Differentiation:Group students by skill-set or rigor and give each group a different activity/organizer to complete. The teacher can sit with struggling students to support them through the activity while proficient and advanced students are challenged working on more rigorous activities.
- Independent Practice:These activities can serve as independent vocabulary practice while adhering to best practices and challenging students.
