PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

Ready to add authentic, independent non-fiction reading into your classroom? Want to try reader’s workshop, or just use more student choice? Track genres and progress without expensive programs, points, or book reports!

This “Book of the Month” program, with similar features as fiction version for middle school, uses simple forms and routines to embed lower-stress reading throughout the school year. Instead of lengthy assignments that kill the joy of books, logs and calendars track student achievement without adding so much work that the reading feels like work, too. Each month’s paperwork can be assessed, but the data can also be collected in a folder to serve as a Reading Portfolio for the school year! Surveys at the beginning and end of the year can also serve as evidence of change in student attitudes and abilities.

This download includes everything you need to jumpstart an independent reading program, whether you launch it for the full year or condense it into one semester. You can either use the suggested timeline for genres, or change what books are read which months.

• Standard-specific Reaction Forms for: Challenge books, “2 Authors, Same Topic”, Companion books, their Favorite non-fiction book, and “2 Versions, Same Topic”
• Bonus Activity: “Magazine/Newspaper Report”
• Bonus Activity: “Explore An App” asks students to evaluate non-fiction apps or websites
• Teacher Checkpoint Log: a one-page chart for your clipboard to track student page numbers at-a-glance each month
