Are your students experiencing difficulty identifying nouns (common nouns and proper nouns)? Well maybe this activity will help them to see the differences between the two.
I created this activity after I gave my students the CCGPS math task "In the Paper" and after reviewing their results, I knew that I needed to review the eight parts of speech. You wouldn't think that 5th graders would need such a review, but in order for my students to write appropriate and use the various parts of speech correctly, they need to know what they are, identify them in their reading, and use them correctly in their verbal and written communication.
Having the students to identify 5 examples of common and proper nouns within the classroom is just the beginning of their review. By creating a Tree Map (Thinking Map), they can begin to also compare and contrast the differences between these examples, which will ultimately lead to their use of a Double Bubble Thinking Map.
I hope that you can find this activity useful for your students. I know it has truly helped my students.
