1. Book Club Tracking Sheet (to keep track of student preparation and completness of each assignment)
2. Book Club Rubric

PACKET INFO: (All packets follow the same format, which allows you to have multiple groups doing the exact same assignments each night but for different books.)

Each packet is 25 pages. The first two pages are assignment pages for students to use and to record due dates (which you may want to hand write before running copies for your groups). The item bullets are checkboxes so that the kids can keep track of what they've completed by checking off.

Day 1: Students are assigned to read about 10% of the book and write a paragraph summarizing the main events from those chapters.
Day 2: Students are assigned to read the next 10% of the book, as well as find 5 vocabulary words. They must record the page number, the quote from the book using the word, and the inferred meaning. **If this will be too challenging for your students, write the page numbers on your student copy using the teacher key at the end of the packet. Then, they just have to find the quote on the page and determine the inferred meaning. Sometimes the vocab words are unfamiliar words, and other times they are words with multiple meanings (so the kids have to infer from the text which meaning is being used.)
Day 3: Students are assigned to complete comprehension questions based on this week's chapters. I have my kids record page numbers next to each answer for ease of discussion in our literature circle the next day.
Day 4: Extension Activity - this is an opportunity for creatively express their comprehension of the book. I have GATE kids (and they LOVE these pages), but I can easily see regular ed students finding these alternative representations helpful and fun to complete.

This repeats each week for 5 weeks with the same pattern; the only difference is that the Extension Activity changes each week. During one week, they work on visualization by drawing/coloring a scene from those chapters in a cool Instagram format; another week they write a conversation between two characters regarding an event from that section in a text message iPhone window format; on yet another extension assignment, they design a bedroom for a character based on the traits implied in the book in a Trading Spaces bedroom-style make-over. I like having the creative activities being different every week because then the kids have different skills (character, plot, setting, main idea, etc.) and strategies to work on using various ways of expressing their knowledge (writing, drawing, etc.)

After the 5 weeks are complete, students independently complete a comprehension quiz on the novel (also included).

A complete teacher key is included at the end of each document for ease of instruction - I have done all the leg work for you, including chapter summaries and hunting down all vocab words, pages, and quotes! :) These novel studies are ready to go; all you have to do is obtain the books for your students.
