NUMBER THE STARS is an amazing work of children’s literature. Set in WWII Denmark, a little girl chooses to help her Jewish friend escape the Nazi soldiers. She has never considered herself brave, but she is called upon to complete a terrifying mission. Year-after-year, my students look forward to studying this novel and historical time period. NUMBER THE STARS is a suspenseful and powerful example of compassion and courage.
This unit includes a detailed calendar, section and page breakdown, all necessary literature circle forms, journal entries, differentiated instruction for high ability learners, pre-reading discussion starters, a WWII map worksheet, chapter-by-chapter after-reading discussion questions, a compare and contrast worksheet, five section quizzes, writing prompts, a What Would You Do? worksheet, a fiction vs. nonfiction worksheet, a novel summary worksheet, and possible novel projects and rubric.
