I have created a resource for teachers who use MAP and would like to use the MAP reports for differentiating and teaching next steps. On the NWEA site, I find it troublesome that there is such a wonderful trove of data in such an unusable format! The online "Learning Continuum" is fantastic, however, there is too much data to look at in one place. I have created a streamlined document for your use.
The purpose of this resource is for a teacher to use their "Class Breakdown by Goal" report to enter their students into groups by their RIT band in EACH area of reading (More on that in the instructions) so the teacher can see exactly what they are ready to learn.
The document shows the new skills in each RIT band without showing the base skills every time. This pairs down what the students in that RIT band are ready to learn about without the things they have already learned clogging up the report!
There is a "Base" of skills in the first RIT band (161-170) and "New" skills are listed in each RIT band afterward. In Example: It is assumed that students in RIT band 191-200 have shown some mastery in all standards covered in the prior RIT bands. Therefore, I have removed all of the mastered skills so you can focus on what to introduce and work on based on how they scored. Skills to the left should be reviewed always and skills to the right are ready to be introduced. Skills in the current RIT band should be your focus in teaching.
This resource requires the following: A printer and online access to your MAP reports.
Step 1: Print Document Single Sided on Letter Sized Paper
Step 2: Staple Three Times Along the Top or Hole Punch Along the Top for Binder
Step 3: Log into your MAP account
Step 4: Click on "Math Growth Reports" on the left under "View Reports"
Step 5: Click on the "Class Breakdown" report
Step 6: Ensure the Term Tested is on the Most Current Term in which you Tested
Step 7: Under "Report Options" select "By Goal"
Step 8: Under "Subject"
Step 9: Click "Create PDF Report"
You will now have a report detailing where each child is in Reading/Informational. Please note that they are no longer only broken down by their overall score, but instead, by their score in several areas. You will notice some scores do not seem to match up. For instance, a child who has an overall average score of 193 might actually be listed in the 171-180 band for Key Ideas and Details and the 201-210 for Language, Craft, and Structure. Next to their name though, you will only see the 193. This info allows you to create more specific grouping based on what you are teaching.
Using this report, write in the students names in the "Students" box for Key Ideas and Details and then Repeat for the Language, Craft, and Structure area. Within Language, Craft, and Structure, there are sub categories. I have kept them separated in this document as each contains very specific information. However, the one score on the "Class Breakdown" report in this area applies to all of the sub areas as well.
I have laminated my reports, whole punched, and put in a binder. I write the students into their categories with a wet erase marker and then move the names when I feel they are ready for the next band or wipe the sheets and rewrite everyone after the winter test with my new data.
