Students begin by associating thunderstorms with low pressure and warm, humid air.
Thunderstorm life cycle stages are broken down in 2 different formats:
Thunderstorms hazards matching:
Cloud to ground lightning
Students use geography throughout the activity working the U.S. states and general region association.
Differentiation between watches and warnings and the associated risks:
Severe thunderstorm watch-hail, winds, and tornadoes
Severe thunderstorm warning
A National Weather Service map is provided in which students evaluate a real severe weather risk and storm report and place common weather symbols: low pressure, cold front, warm front, and storm images.
Students distinguish between supercell thunderstorms and frontal thunderstorms (squall lines).
This works well for any level but is GREAT for special education students or college prep learners that need an alternative assessment and may not be great at traditional labs.

The application to a diverse body of learners, whether it be age or ability level, is predicated on the fact that the instructor determines the difficulty level of the whole activity or part of the activity based on what information is given and what information is not as well as how verbal questions are presented to the student(s).
This is a thorough and DYNAMIC activity that covers a wide variety of information about weather forecasting and severe weather. This has been used as a pre-class, lab/activity, study guide, review, and assessment. This is an effective teaching tool one on one, in small groups, and as a class when using a Smart Board/Promethean Board/Projection.
