This menu was designed to compact New York State's Grade 4 El Module 1 curriculum. It gives students opportunities to practice multiple research strategies and research using the books recommended and/or provided by the curriculum. Teachers can teach whole-class lessons or create small groups to support students as needed. The menu also offers student choice in terms of the products and writing topics. Because this is the first module of the year, students are expected to write a paragraph and show mastery of paragraph structure.
Corn: This is meant to be background research about the Haudenosaunee.
Beans: This is written work that increases in complexity across the boxes. Each box has two questions to write responses to and they are asked to provide visuals to match.
Squash: This is more creative, but also builds on their background knowledge they've accumulated. It includes journal writing, drawing and more.
