Use this lesson in your Back to School activities as a way to introduce your ELA module 1 (NYS common core ELA curriculum from EngageNY) while allowing students to come up with your classroom rules and expectations together. Classroom management is always better when students are involved in the process and learn why it is important! This lesson uses the Guiding Questions and Big Ideas introduced at the beginning of Module 1 and ties them into making your beginning of the year classroom rules and expectations.
This is a great tie in to Module 1 because they will be creating a constitution for their school community as their Module 1 End of Unit Assessment! This is also a great way to get students involved in the thought process behind why rules are important and how the rules help with communication and help keep them safe. They will be exploring the Iroquois constitution in Module 1 so this is a great start to the Module as well as to the school year! Their class list of rules and expectations can then be revised and added to as the school year and Module 1 go on!
