PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

With this activity, students engage in a discussion about an author's use of an appeal to convey a central idea. Students love watching films and in this lesson, students watch, or can just simply read, speeches from Remember the Titans, We Were Soldiers, and Rocky Balboa to identify a central idea and the speaker's appeal(s) to the audience. Some students may not be familiar with these films, so I find the lesson to be more effective when I show the clips of these films.

Suggested Use:
1. Review what a central idea is and how to actively read to identify the central idea.
2. Watch the first clip (Remember the Titans) and ask students to work in small groups (3-4 students) to establish the central idea in one sentence.
3. Introduce logos and instruct students to locate examples of logos from the passage.
4. Watch the first clip (We Were Soldiers) and ask students to work in small groups (3-4 students) to establish the central idea in one sentence.
5. Introduce pathos and instruct students to locate examples of pathos from the passage.
6. Watch the first clip (Rocky Balboa) and ask students to independently establish the central idea in one sentence.
7. Introduce ethos and instruct students to locate examples of ethos from the passage.
