PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

The text is an excellent source to practice identifying a central idea in a passage. But, even if you don't need to prepare students for the New York State Common Core English Regents, this activity is a great way to introduce rhetorical devices such as diction and rhetorical questions using a speech from the film V for Vendetta. If you don't need it to practice for the exam, just modify the first page to fit your objectives. The text is already formatted with line numbers.

Suggested Use:
1. First, introduce the task. (Do you want students to focus on diction, rhetorical questions, both, or perhaps a different writing strategy?)
2. Define the strategies you are asking students to look for in the passage.

Option A: (Entire Class)
3. Watch, or read, the speech delivered by V, the main character from the film. (Watching emphasizes the tone of the passage for students, but if you use the film, I believe there are a few lines from other characters that are not part of the speech.)
4. Identify the central idea.
5. Discuss, or ask students to identify, the strategy you introduced, or reviewed, prior to examining the passage.

Option B: (Small Groups)
3. Watch, or read, the speech delivered by V, the main character from the film.
4. Identify the central idea.
5. Assign students into group. Each group examines one paragraph of the passage for a specific writing strategy.
6. Each group presents their work to the class.

Option C: (Independently)
3. Students read the speech and identify the central idea.
4. Using one of the introduced strategies, students develop a 2-3 paragraph response as required by the Part 3 guidelines.
