This graphic organizer was made to be used to teach students how to approach a New York State Controlling Idea paragraph. It shows the students the importance of choosing evidence to support that controlling idea and the significance of being able to explain how that evidence truly does relate to the controlling idea you have presented. This graphic organizer works great with 9th and 10th grade students who are just learning the concept of formulating a controlling idea. The great part about this graphic organizer is that it asks the students to provide enough information that they don't necessarily have to write the entire paragraph. You get a good idea of who is understanding the concept of controlling ideas just by the information on the organizer.
