Massive iron cylinders are dropped onto nails partially driven into a block of wood. Some nails are driven deeper than others.
Conservation of energy guides thinking about what happens here. The included presentation features video from Ztek's Physics: Cinema Classics along with animations and illustrations created by me. Variations on the demonstration are pondered and discussed.
The presentation is how I would use this in class. I transformed the student document to a print-friendly Google Docs file on Google Drive during remote teaching/distance learning (RT;DL). This lesson is to be guided by the instructor.
