Product Description
-This is a colored and black and white place mat that fits on a letter sized paper to have students name up to 6 digit number in five different ways:

1. Standard form
2. Draw a model
3. Write value of each digit from ones to hundred thousands
4. Expanded form
5. Word form

-It is perfect for math investigations, math centers, or small group instruction.

-Make an anchor chart of the place mat or use a doc cam to model 5 different ways to name a number up to the hundred thousands place value.

Differentiate Activity

-You can differentiate the activity by writing 2 to 6 digits numbers on the place mat and have the children name it in 5 different ways using base ten blocks. Provide the students with an answer key so they can self-correct with a partner.

-You can also cut out the cards with numbers 0 – 9 and have the children draw a number from a bag to create a 2 to 6 digit number.

-You can also use a number spinner. You can find FREE assorted spinners on http://www.mathwire.com/archives/apr06.html

Tiered Instruction

-Use Base Ten Blocks to complete each part of the Place Value Mat (if you do not have models, you can laminate blackline masters from http://lrt.ednet.ns.ca/PD/BLM_Ess11/table_of_contents.htm. Use different colored cardstock). Begin with 2 digits if the student needs Tier 1 (behind 2 or more grade levels) begin with 3 digits if the student needs Tier 2 (behind 1 year)
