Each year in kindergarten, I begin with name activities. One of the things we do in our classroom is Name of the Day. This is truly one of the most simple, but wonderful ways to focus on name recognition, letter knowledge, counting skills, syllable segmenting and creating a sense of community in the classroom. Name of the day is easy peasy!
1. Choose a child's name at random ( I have mine printed out and laminated on card stock)
2. Discuss at length the name: # of letters; # of syllables; any repeating letters; what does it begin with etc...
3. Cheer, clap and spell the name in whatever ways fit your class!
4. Model writing the name and drawing the picture of the person. I discuss at length every part of this: what color hair, long, short, curly etc..; what color eyes; clothing, long sleeves, short sleeves etc..;
At this point the children complete the Name of the Day sheet and we post the child's name on the board as we build our classroom name word wall. I collect all of the sheets as children complete them and every child gets to take home a collection of drawings of themselves. They love it! Parents love it as well!
I hope you enjoy this freebie! Be sure to leave me feedback and check out my other items! Thanks so much! -Connie
