There are two distinct types of inorganic compounds. They are identified with different naming systems. Compounds of metals and nonmetals, whether they are binary or contain polyatomic ions, are named by the Stock system. Compounds of only nonmetals are binary covalents. The binary covalent system uses prefixes. This Powerpoint presentation teaches all the skills needed to name both types of inorganic compounds, and to write the formulas from the names. There are three sections, each of which can be a separate lesson. They are: Determining the Charge on the Metal Ion, The Stock System, and the Binary Covalent System.
