Naming Fractions Task Cards - These Naming Fractions Task Cards include representations that require the student to name the number of parts of size 1/b where b is the number of equal-sized pieces. Other Naming Fractions Task Cards require students to name the size of each piece of a given representation. Word problems and a number line representation of a rope also require students to name the number of parts of size 1/b in a fractional problem.

Naming Fractions Task Cards include 20 different cards for Grade 3 based on the Common Core State Standards (3.NF.A.1 and 3.NF.A.2(a-b). These Naming Fractions Task Cards include a Title card, a suggested use card, a Common Core Standards card, and an Answers card if you choose to make them part of a deck. A full size page of answers are included to use in a learning center or as part of a game.

These Naming Fractions Task Cards can be used in learning centers, for independent review, or in a game setting. The cards can be printed in color or grayscale. For long term use, you will want to laminate the cards first or insert them into the pages of a small 4x6 photo album where students can write their answers directly on each page with a dry erase marker. The following Common Core standards are covered:

CCSS.Math.Content.3.NF.A.1 Understand a fraction 1/b as the quantity formed by 1 part when a whole is partitioned into b equal parts; understand a fraction a/b as the quantity formed by a parts of size 1/b.

CCSS.Math.Content.3.NF.A.2 Understand a fraction as a number on the number line; represent fractions on a number line diagram.

CCSS.Math.Content.3.NF.A.2a Represent a fraction 1/b on a number line diagram by defining the interval from 0 to 1 as the whole and partitioning it into b equal parts. Recognize that each part has size 1/b and that the endpoint of the part based at 0 locates the number 1/b on the number line.

CCSS.Math.Content.3.NF.A.2b Represent a fraction a/b on a number line diagram by marking off a lengths 1/b from 0. Recognize that the resulting interval has size a/b and that its endpoint locates the number a/b on the number line.
