Students new to chemistry frequently have difficulty learning how to name simple inorganic chemicals (covalent compounds and ionic molecules). This Physical Science Classroom activity is designed to test their understanding once basic instruction has been given. It may be used as a review or summative assessment. This activity also provides an opportunity for creativity and team work.
Students create their own product for this lesson, either on a poster or a sheet of butcher paper. The aim is to create a board game that guides chemical formulas to their correct naming conventions.
Target level: 8th through 10th grade.
Time: 50-90 minutes.
