This is a great activity for students to identify strong, good, and weak narrative beginnings. In this activity, students can work either alone or with a partner to RATE different beginnings of the same story.
This handout can come before a mini-lesson on narrative hooks or as a review. It could also be used during writing centers, small group intervention, as a review, or test prep. It works well as a cooperative learning activity as well due to the discussion it generates between the students having to agree with where they should rate the hook/lead.
Feel free to change the names and events in the story.
