Few students take the time (or know how) to truly revise their narratives. Editing checklists are helpful for some students (and even required sometimes as accommodations), but are overwhelming for others who don’t know how to use them effectively. Break down the tasks and model the process with this interactive editing checklist and card set!

This set helps students learn how to become independent editors, rereading drafts multiple times for specific elements to authentically practice the revision process.

“Task cards” are one of the best-kept secrets of the primary world that work well in secondary ELA, too. Visual learners can use the traditional editing checklist to complete each task and check them off one by one. Tactile learners benefit from the cards because they help the student focus on one item at a time to independently prioritize or separate what they have done and what they still need to do.

Very similar to my Interactive Editing Checklist & Task Cards for ESSAYS, these task cards work for EITHER creative writing/fiction or memoir-style autobiographical writing. The prompts are rigorous and vary from single to multi-step tasks. The cards also vary in terms of completing with computers or a hard copy, independently or with a partner, and how long the task takes to complete. Pick and choose which ones apply to your current assignment, and customize a deck that you want students to complete.

These colorful task cards cover seven categories that fall in the revision process: Editing, Revising, Feedback, Formatting, Strategies, Story Conventions, and “Challenge”. (The Challenge cards are great for students who are further ahead or think they’re “done”.)

This download includes a TOTAL of 21 sheets (4 pages of docs & 17 sheets of task cards in a PPT):

• 2-page Editing Checklist, which includes ALL of the 48 prompts that are also on cards

• 2-page List of 25 ways to use the cards in a secondary ELA classroom

• 17 sheets (48 unique cards) contain prompts and are ready to print, copy and cut out. Laminate them into class sets that stay in your room, or give students their own individual sets.

• In addition, a BLANK set of each template has been provided so that you can add in your own editing tasks specific to your class, ability level, or assignment! There are 8 pages (48 cards) of blank, editable templates. (Students could also be asked to make their own, based on their individual habits or needs!)
