Do your students struggle to write an organized, detailed, polished narrative essay? So do mine! That's why I developed this handy-dandy narrative essay graphic organizer. It's more than a worksheet or a handout. It's a scaffolding tool that helps break the writing process down into simple steps. It's also a great way to differentiate instruction: allow advanced students to follow the steps independently and work ahead, while you guide struggling writers through each step.
I have used this graphic organizer with freshmen to write a narrative essay in approximately 1 week in a block school setting with 80 minutes classes. If you have 50 minute classes or an A/B day, it will likely take closer to 2 weeks. If you assign some parts of the process as homework, you could potentially finish the essay in as little as 3 days, although a lot depends on how quickly your students are able to commit their ideas to paper.
