Sample items from the checklist:

Is it a fiction or nonfiction piece that tells a story?
Did the writer tell a story in order to entertain and/or teach a lesson through the plot and characters?
Was it interesting to read?
Were there any flashbacks?
Did the writer include interior monologues?
Did the writer include a strong lead? Interesting hook?
Did you feel connected to the action?

Did the introduction:

  • let the reader know where the events are happening
  • introduce characters that are involved in the events
  • tell the reader what the conflict is
  • begin developing emotions about the conflict

Did the beginning:

  • introduce characters
  • introduce the setting
  • introduce the conflict by providing necessary information, setting the stage for the problem, and building emotions

Did the middle:

  • use "showing" description
  • develop thoughts and feelings
  • include the most exciting part
  • develop the characters and conflict
  • increase excitement and emotions
  • build up to the most exciting part
  • show the most exciting part in a few vivid sentences
