Do you want your students to write a narrative essay that will get them thinking outside of the box? This unit will do just that! These documents will help you and your students take a look into the lives of everyday heroes: police officers, paramedics, and firefighters. Students will fill out a personality survey to help determine which of these three groups best match their interests. Evenly divide the class into these three branches of public safety... then discuss with them and have them discuss these branches among themselves. I used two episodes from the series Third Watch to show while teaching this unit, but showing the episodes is not absolutely necessary. Students loved this unit and the work that they put out was very impressive.
*Police, Fire, EMS Personality/Interest Survey (to group students into appropriate public safety branch)
*Narrative Notes (observations - use while watching show/discussion)
*Interview Questions Outline (if able to get police officer, paramedic, or firefighter into the classroom)
