From Electric English...
This is an introductory writing exercise that will open your student's eyes to the possibilities of their own work. The individual assignments I have also posted, which are contained within this packet, give detailed explanations for what the activities are, and how they will benefit you and your students.
This is a small part of a bigger unit, but, of course, if you have something already created that you would like to pair it with, the activities will stand on their own. And, yes, they are certainly applicable to Common Core Standards; in fact, if you take the time to complete all 14 exercises of the process, you will cover every Common Core Standard for writing that there is. For me, personally though, whether Common Core or not, these are just good teaching practices that will greatly benefit your students, and you will be amazed at how their writing improves over the course of the year. Use them for what is best for you:)
This packet contains about two weeks of work, give or take a day. I have, intentionally, not included lesson plans with these packets because I feel, at times, they can be stifling.... The idea here is; you can pick and choose whatever material you want; in whatever order you want (depending on the time you have); instead of, constantly feeling like you must adhere to a certain schedule. Plus, this way, you have many resources at your disposal and can mix and match from year to year depending on your mood. This packet contains the following:
- Powerpoint: The Narrative
- Narrative Example 1: Go over together in class
- Narrative Example 2: Go over together in class
- Research: Salem Witch Trials (I recommend this for homework.)
- Research: Jamestown Colony (I recommend this for homework.)
- Writing Assignment: The Narrative
- Homework: Student Selection for Writing Assignment
- Peer Editing: The Narrative
- Rubric: The Narrative
Take this material and run with it!! If you have any questions or observations at all, please feel free to contact me :)
