This activity gives students an opportunity to analyze good writing. We often ask students to incorporate figurative language, vivid verbs, reflections, compound/complex sentences, etc. This activity provides an example of these devices being used in a narrative piece. Students are asked to analyze the writing to get a better understanding of the devices contained in a solid narrative. This color-coding activity helps students visualize these devices being incorporated. Students are then asked to extend their learning by applying this activity to a piece of their own writing.
