This resource coincides with the Grade 3 Lucy Calkins Narrative Writing Unit of Study (Unit 1), Lesson 10: Storytellers Develop the Heart of a Story. I use my example of writing about a haunted house to show the levels of writing and how storytellers can add details, thoughts, actions and dialogue to slow down at the heart of the story and tell the story bit by bit. We also discuss using figurative language to help make our writing stronger and more interesting. I then have students find the hearts of their stories, marking it with a heart symbol. They share this part with their writing partner, and discuss ideas on what they can add to develop it. Then writers get to work on revising the heart of their stories using the strategies discussed, and the example of the haunted house story.
