This narrative writing project is designed to help students write a detailed story. There is a planning page for each story element (main character, setting, antagonist, supporting characters and plot). I will have the students complete main character page first. Some students may want to draw the picture to help describe the main character and some students may benefit from waiting until the end. I let the students complete the rest of the planning pages in the order that makes the most sense to them.
The students will be given the rubric at the beginning of the unit to help guide their writing. While the students are planning, we will analyze literature. We actually analyze literature throughout the year, but during this unit we will pay particular attention to author’s purpose, dialogue and organization. The story the students write is based on the theme we are studying in the classroom.
Once the students are finished planning, they will write a rough draft. I usually have my students type their writing projects, but sometimes I am using the computers for other projects or I don’t have access to computers. I included lined paper for students to write their final drafts and draw illustrations with captions. When the students are finished they will score their writing using the rubric before I score the project.
