PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

Use this resource that includes 5 narrative writing prompts to help address the Common Core State Standard for Narrative Writing (W.3.3). Students respond to a narrative writing prompt based on a prompt from a well known fairy tale.

How it Works
In this resource the student practices first identifying character traits of well known fairy tale characters. Then using this information, they show how the traits motivate and affect the events in the story.

Once the student has identified and written about the traits, the student completes a RAFT writing activity that helps the student assume the persona of the character. RAFT stands for Role, Audience, Format and Topic.

The five RAFT writing activities include:
★ Advice column written by Goldilocks
★ Text messages between Little Red Riding Hood and the Woodsman
★ A friendly letter between Jack of the Beanstalk and the Giant’s Wife
★ An email from Hansel and Gretel to the Evil Witch
★ A How-To Manual from the Big Bad Wolf to the Three Little Pigs

5 narrative writing prompts
Each prompt presents a situation that goes beyond the fairy tale and prompts the student to write a narrative that includes:
★ establishing the setting, characters, narrator and the problem.
★ sequencing events and using time words such as: when, now, then, next, later, etc.
★ using dialogue to show the character’s thoughts and feelings and how they respond to a situation.
★ using description to show character’s actions, to show events and how characters respond to a situation.
★ providing a closing or an ending.

Also included is a Narrative Writing Prewriting Planner that helps the student plan out the narrative. To teach the students to write dialogue, the Juicy Dialogue Planning sheet is also included that shows students how to use quotation marks and commas in dialogue.
