These mentor texts will give students high quality examples of descriptive settings and imagery in literature to be used during a narrative writing unit. This lesson lends itself to a gradual release of responsibility approach. You can model your initial observations about the first text: what you notice about how the author chooses to describe a particular place. Students can then work together or independently analyze the rest. From there, they can take their observations back to their own writing to improve their own descriptions of the setting.
